Muncie Union Station or Union Depot was located at 630 South High Street in Muncie, Indiana. Built in 1883 and closed on April 30, 1971, it was demolished in March 1990.
Muncie had three passenger stations at one time, Union Depot being the largest.
Built originally for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis (the 'Big Four') made of limestone it was built in 1883 in the Romanesque Revival style for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway (the 'Big Four' or CCC & St. L).
It was added on to in 1892 and again in 1902. The last addition was a large waiting room and ticket office.
In earlier decades, it served the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway (the 'Big Four') and the New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad (the 'Nickel Plate Road'). In later years, the New York Central, the parent company for the CCC & St. L., continued passenger trains in its own name.
On the North Side of the building was the
Lake Erie and Western Railroad
New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad (the 'Nickel Plate Road')
On the South side of the building was the
Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway (the 'Big Four')
New York Central Railroad
In 1959, the last Nickel Plate passenger trains left the station. The final passenger trains, discontinued in the liquidation of routes for the switchover to Amtrak in 1971, were unnamed Indianapolis - Cleveland Penn Central east- and westbound remnants of the Southwestern Limited.
The last regularly scheduled passenger service was in 1971. The building went into disuse and survived until 1990, when it was demolished.
The station hosted several named long-distance passenger trains.
